Freebie Review: New Bolthouse Farms Super Smoothie

This is the first post in a new series called “Freebie Review”. I will be trying and reviewing products I received for free from popular grocery rebate companies like Aisle, Westock, Vizer Velocity, and Ibotta.

First Impressions

I was recently able to try Bolthouse Farms new super smoothie and decided to go with the Strawberry Dragon Fruit flavor thanks to the free rebate deal from Aisle (link at the bottom).  It has a fair amount of protein of 12 grams which appears to be one of the bigger differences compared to their original smoothies. There is also supposedly 50% less sugar too.

What’s Actually in It?

Bolthouse Farms Strawberry Dragon Fruit Super Smoothie contains a blend of:

  • Coconut milk
  • Strawberry puree
  • Apple puree
  • Pear juice
  • Banana puree
  • Non-fat Greek yogurt
  • Dragon fruit puree
  • Lemon juice
  • Whey protein concentrate
  • Monk fruit juice
  • …among a few other smaller ingredients

It’s not a protein shake or a meal replacement, but it’s a solid snack or post-workout refresher. I wouldn’t rely on it to keep me full for hours, but it’s great when you need something quick.

Price

I paid $3.99 for a bottle at my local grocery store. This is pretty cheap for a smoothie.

Thoughts

Overall, I enjoyed the taste and thought it was one of the better pre-bottled smoothies out there. However, I thought it was still a little too sweet despite having 50% less sugar than the original. It’s a subtle reminder that “less sugar” doesn’t always mean “low sugar.”

Texture wise, it leans more toward a liquid yogurt than a traditional smoothie. It’s ultra-smooth, with no chunks, pulp, or fruit pieces which some people might love, but for me, it made the drink feel more processed than fresh. The fruit is all in puree form, which contributes to that ultra smooth consistency but also gives it a slightly manufactured vibe. If you’re used to blending your own smoothies with fresh or frozen fruit, this might feel like a downgrade in terms of texture and freshness.

As a snack, it did the job. The added protein definitely helped keep me full for a bit, and it’s a convenient option when you’re short on time. But I did notice a bit of a sugar crash shortly after. Not dramatic, but enough to make me wish I’d paired it with something else.

In the end, while it’s a solid grab-and-go option, I’d still say making your own smoothie at home (even with frozen fruit) is probably the better route if you’re chasing freshness and a more natural taste. This one’s good in a pinch, but not something I’d drink often.

Would I buy it again? I probably will. Especially if I’m craving a fruity drink and don’t have the time to make a smoothie with fresh fruit.
